Cultural Awareness Training

Lance Lewis and Janito Adams from Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service visited our Nambour office recently to deliver Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural Awareness training to Coast2Bay staff.

The aim of the training course was to increase knowledge and gain an understanding of the history, culture and the impact of colonisation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, families and communities, how to overcome barriers and communicate sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

A valuable training session for all of our staff who also enjoyed learning about their own and other work colleagues personal footprints and cultural backgrounds.

April Booin Gari Festival 2016

Noosaville Lions Park came alive once again for the annual Booin Gari local festival in April.

Booin Gari means ‘Come this way ‘in Gubbi Gubbi language.

The festival provides an opportunity to build relationships and acknowledge the history and achievements of local Indigenous people and their culture.

A wonderful day of celebrations with music and entertainment, art, workshops, activities and food, for all ages.

Coast2Bay was one of many community groups in attendance on the day, joining in with all the fun and providing information to the local community about our organisation and the housing solutions we provide for the community.

PiR System Gap Initiative – Daliya House

This facility, known as “Daliya House”, involved the conversion of existing office space into bespoke shared accommodation and on-site carer assistance.

Prior to this, eligible individuals found themselves without accommodation exit points from hospital, resulting in longer than necessary hospital stays. Consequently, this back-log impacted on access to hospital services for others who were acutely unwell.

This facility supports these individuals along their road to recovery, offering a safe, supported environment. It works with people to identify and develop longer term housing pathway and connects them to mental health support services.
