 September 2015 Edible Gardens Workshops

During July and August, a number of our tenants got their gloves on and shovels out at a series of Winter Garden Maintenance workshops held at our Coast2Bay edible gardens in complexes across Beerwah, Landsborough and Maroochydore.

Old plants were removed, crops were harvested, fresh soil was laid and new seedlings were planted, all under the guidance of our gardening guru and permaculturalist Leonie Shanahan. The workshops were open to all of our tenants across the Sunshine Coast region and saw a number traveling from as far as Coolum and Point Arkwright to join in on the fun. It was fantastic to see so many keen gardeners get together to lend a helping hand, learn knew skills, and share their own gardening tips and tricks.

With Spring just around the corner, and the hint of the warmer months ahead, local Gardening Guru, Leonie Shanahan, joined us recently at our Garden and Nutrition Workshop at Beerwah to help get our garden beds  back into shape and ready to start producing the first of our summer harvest of tomatoes, basil, chives and salads.

April 2015 Booin Gari Festival

Coast2Bay Housing Group spent the day out and about on Tuesday 14th April at the 2015 Booin Gari Festival at Noosaville’s Lions Park. What better way to spend the day then sharing it with thousands of people with one common cause – to celebrate our Indigenous culture through music, art, entertainment and food. Coast2Bay were one of a select group of local organisations and community groups invited as a stall holder, providing a great opportunity for us to showcase our organisation and the housing solutions we provide for community. March 2015 Community Challenge Fun Day

On Saturday the 14th March, the Our Village Foundation hosted its second Community Challenge Fun Day. This is one of a number of events hosted by the Foundation giving community groups within the Moreton Bay region an opportunity to raise funds for their chosen cause. Coast2Bay were one of 27 teams competing for $50,000 worth of cash prizes up for grabs on the day. A team of fifteen Coast2Bay staff wore their best scarecrow outfit and turned up in force hoping to claim their stake in cash to support the expansion of the Organisation’s Our Patch Edible Gardens program across our Moreton Bay community housing complexes.

The day was jam packed with challenges ranging from all things physical, mental, creative and chance, including points for best-dressed award and team parade. The team was confident in their performance across the day and were sure they had the best-dressed award in the bag. So when the final points were tallied and the Coast2Bay Scarecrows weren’t even mentioned in the top 10 point scorers for the day, let’s just say there were 15 scarecrows who had lost a lot of their stuffing. Nonetheless, it was a great day out with lots of laughs shared and fantastic moments captured on camera.

Perhaps a little practice wouldn’t go astray next year!

February 2015 Tenant TAFE Information Sessions

Coast2Bay’s series of Knowledge Wise workshops for 2015 was kick started in February with a TAFE Information session held at the Nambour Community Centre. Tenants were provided with everything they needed to know about a number of exciting skill development and training courses available at TAFE, from a Certificate in Horticulture to Community Services. Tenants came away from the session excited about the opportunities presented to them, with a number booking follow-up appointments with TAFE teachers to arrange course sign up for first Semester!

The overwhelming response to this Information Session demonstrates that skill development, ongoing learning and education are important to our tenants, and we are pleased to announce that TAFE East Coast Queensland will continue to provide these information sessions for Coast2Bay tenants throughout the year – it’s never too late to start learning or update your skills through TAFE!
